Preparing the lighter |

Fill a plastic basin about 2/3 full with tap water. |

Obtain a lighter. Notice that the striking mechanism has been removed for convenience and safety. Wipe the lighter clean and dry with a paper towel. Set the flame adjustment to the largest flame. |

Weigh the lighter on a balance and record the mass to the nearest hundredth of a gram in your laboratory notebook. |
