Collecting the gaseous butane

Connect the piece of Tiagon tubing provided to the lighter. The tubing should fit over the small “spout” where butane is normally delivered to the striking mechanism. The tubing should hug the spout very snugly, so that no gas escapes. If there is not a tight fit between the lighter and the tubing, ask for a new piece of tubing.

attach tubing to lighter

Fill a 100 mL graduated cylinder with water. Using the plastic basin, submerge the graduated cylinder and turn it upside down slowly. If any bubbles are present in the cylinder, repeat this step.

fill and invert graduated cylinder

Feed the end of the tubing that is not attached to the lighter under water and into the graduated cylinder. The tube should extend at least four inches into the cylinder.

thread tubing into graduated cylinder

Press the lever on the lighter. After about 10-15 seconds, butane will begin traveling through the tube and into the graduated cylinder. Make sure that all of the gas released is bubbling into the cylinder. If bubbles escape, the experiment must be restarted. You’ll know this is happening if you see bubbles coming up through the water in the basin.

press lever on lighter

Continue to hold down the lever until about 75 mL of gas is collected. Then remove the tubing from the cylinder. Be sure to leave the cylinder upside down in the basin.
