When using spectrometers and gas discharge tubes, the following
safety issues apply:
- The high voltage supplies used in this lab are potentially
dangerous. You should NOT TOUCH
the metal connectors when the power is on - you could receive
a shock. The gas discharge tubes become extremely hot when
used with the power supplies. You should be careful not
to touch them until they have cooled.
When doing the flame tests, the following safety issues
apply:
- The spectrometers will melt if brought too close to a
flame, so keep your equipment far away from your flame tests.
In addition, working with an open flame presents fire hazards;
keep long hair and loose clothing tied back.
- The metal spatulas used to introduce chemicals into the
flame can become very hot. Be careful when handling this
item.
- The metal spatulas should not be used in more than one
container of reagent. For instance, the spatula used to
dispense nickel (II) nitrate should not be used for the
dispensing of any other chemical. This will eliminate contamination
and make unknown identification easier for everyone.
