Melting Points of Organic Compounds

Solid organic compounds usually have a characteristic temperature at which they melt. The melting point, mp, may be used to help identify an unknown compound.

Impure sustances often melt at a lower temperature than the pure compound and melting is observed to occur over a wide temperature range. Hence the way a compound melts is an indication of purity.

Let's look at some ways to measure melting points.
