Distillation

Volatile substances can be removed from nonvolatile material by heating the mixture. If the volatile material is collected the process is called a simple distillation.

Homogenous mixtures of volatile liquids can often be separated by distillation. If the boiling points of the components are similar than a fractional distillation may be required.

Let's look at the boiling points of pure compounds and mixtures of two volatile compounds.
