Nitration of Benzene

Treatment of benzene with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid converts it to nitrobenzene.

In this reaction a proton on the benzene ring is replaced by a nitro, -NO2, group.

Let's study the nitration of benzene, toluene, and p-dichlorobenzene in acetic acid and see what it tells us about the mechanism of this reaction.
