Hydrogenation of Alkenes

Alkenes react with hydrogen gas and a catalyst such as platinum to form the corresponding alkane.

In this reaction, hydrogen is first adsorbed on the catalyst, then the alkene picks up hydrogen atoms from the surface of the catalyst.
