Alcohol Common Names

Alcohols contain an -OH group and have the general formula:

ROH

Simple alcohols are often called by their 'common' name which is just the name of the alkyl group followed by the word alcohol.

Example:

CH3OH

is called methyl alcohol because the R group is methyl. Methyl alcohol is sometimes called wood alcohol.
