IUPAC Names of Carboxylic Acids

The IUPAC name of a simple carboxylic acid is generated by replacing the last e of the name of the alkane with the same number of carbons with oic acid.

For example, this acid has 1 carbon:

The alkane with 1 carbon is methane so this is methanoic acid.
