Let's make a list of the elements in order of increasing atomic number.

In making the list, let's try to place the elements so that those with similar chemical properties are located together in columns. This will produce a table that will make it easier for use to predict the properties of elements with which we may not be familiar.

Hydrogen has an atomic number of 1 so we will start with it.
