Metal and Nonmetal Oxides

In these experiments you will burn the nonmetals phosphorus, sulfur and wood, and the metal magnesium in air. You will also allow the metal sodium to react with water.

Burning in air converts these substances into oxides. The oxides will be dissolved in water and the solutions tested to see if they are acidic or basic.

From the results of these experiments you will draw conclusions about the acidity of oxides from metals and nonmetals.
