Tips for Running Reactions
Be sure to combine reagents in the appropriately labeled area of
the chart. This will avoid confusion
Each cell of the chart is half black and half white. Try to center
the reaction on the dividing line. Having both a dark and a light
background behind your reaction will make it easier to see the variety
of gasses, precipitates, and colors that form
To run a reaction, add a couple drops of the first reagent, then
a drop or two of the second. Be sure not to touch the tip of the
microburette to other solutions or the plastic. You may need to
add another drop of one solution or the other, and you can stir
with a small stirring rod (be sure to rinse this with distilled
water and wipe dry between uses)
To clean up an individual reaction, use an extra microburette to
suck up the reaction and then discard it into a waste beaker. Then
use a cotton swab to clean and dry the area.
If you want to clean off the entire sheet, add some water and pour
the entire mixture into your waste beaker. Rinse well with deionized
water and dry with a paper towel.
Be sure to take very careful observations. You probably can't be
too specific! You'll need this information later, so it is very
important to write down thorough observations.
